Documents are for identity and admin — not control
Passport and personal documents safekeeping for MDWs (Singapore) is how employers handle a migrant domestic worker’s passport, Work Pass card, and personal papers: secure storage when needed, clear access, and admin copies — without using documents as punishment or leverage. Room and privacy boundaries sit in #29. Abuse / ill-treatment zero-tolerance sits in #50.

Step 1 — Separate “admin need” from “control habit”
Legitimate moments to handle documents:
- Work Pass / renewal / medical appointments (with EA guidance)
- Opening a bank account or similar errand she asked help with
- Making a photocopy she agrees to for household records
Not legitimate: holding her passport so she “won’t run,” or refusing access during rest days / disputes.
Step 2 — Agree safekeeping in plain words
If documents are stored in a household safe for fire/theft reasons:
- She knows where they are
- She can access them without begging or waiting for a mood
- Co-employers follow the same rule
Write the practice on the house-rules sheet (#32).
Step 3 — Prefer copies for routine admin
Keep photocopies / scans for insurance, EA, or clinic forms when allowed. Return originals promptly after any appointment. Work Pass stage orientation: #108.
Step 4 — What not to do
- Withhold passport / Work Pass as punishment
- Hide documents during a transfer-out or resignation conversation (#114)
- Mix document control with illegal deployment or other compliance risks
- Rank “who keeps the passport” by nationality stereotypes
Ill-treatment reminders: #50.
Step 5 — When to loop EA or soft MOM channels
- Disagreement about where documents should sit
- Lost / stolen passport process help
- Any welfare or coercion concern
Start with your licensed EA (#26). For when to contact MOM: #51.
