When Helper Asks to Use the Family Tablet or iPad (Singapore)

Published 20 September 2026

The family tablet is not her phone — and not a streaming login alone

When helper asks to use the family tablet or iPad (Singapore) is the employer decision brief for a live-in MDW who wants time on a shared household tablet: which profile she may use, how kids’ apps differ from her own rest-time use, where the device charges, what she may download, whether the photo library is open to her, and how logout / screen lock works when she finishes. Phone and social media boundaries stay on #31. Employer streaming accounts or shared logins stay on #178. Photos or videos of the children sit on #191. Wi‑Fi passwords and door codes sit on #150. A mobile line in her own name sits on #158. This page owns shared tablet / iPad use only.

General guidance only. Soft MOM: mom.gov.sg. SmartMaid.com.sg is a marketplace for helper search. Licensed EAs place MDWs. Tablets, Apple IDs, and app-store accounts are not maid agencies — and SmartMaid does not run your household devices. Platform ≠ agency. No invented $. This is not legal advice.

Neighbouring hubs:

Step 1 — Decide yes/no and which profile — before the next request

Say aloud whether the household tablet may be used at all, and on which profile: a Guest / Limited account, a dedicated helper profile you create, or never the kids’ main profile. Name whether Face ID / passcode stays with you only, or whether she gets a temporary unlock during agreed windows. If co-employers disagree on “she can use the iPad after dinner” vs “tablet is kids-only,” align first (#120). Write the rule on the house-rules sheet (#32). Her own phone norms stay on #31 — this step is shared tablet profile access, not her personal handset.

Step 2 — Kids’ apps vs her own rest time

Separate two windows: (1) kids’ apps / homework / cartoons she may open while supervising children under your brief, and (2) her own leisure (messaging family, YouTube, games) only in rest time you already agreed. Soft fairness: do not treat tablet use as unpaid overtime babysitting disguised as “you may watch something.” Soft privacy for her rest and belongings remains #29. Phone-time fairness stays on #31 — here you only decide whether the family tablet is part of her rest options or stays kids-only.

Step 3 — Charging spot, downloads, and app-store / Apple ID rules

Name where the tablet sleeps and charges overnight (dock in the living room, not her room by default — or the reverse if you prefer). Say whether she may download new apps, buy in-app items, or sign into her own Apple ID / Google account on the device. Default soft rule: no new downloads without asking; no payment methods left open on a shared profile. Streaming logins (Netflix, Disney+, Spotify on employer accounts) stay on #178 — this step only covers installing or signing into apps on the tablet itself. Wi‑Fi password changes when you rotate household access stay on #150; owning her own mobile line stays on #158.

Step 4 — Photo library, Camera Roll, and logout

Decide whether the shared Photos / Camera Roll is visible to her profile. Soft default for many households: helper profile cannot open family albums; Camera access off unless you turn it on for a named task. If she wants to take or keep photos or videos of the children, that consent path is #191 — not a blank “tablet Camera is open.” Script logout: when her window ends, she signs out of her chats / browser if you asked, returns the tablet to the charging spot, and does not leave your Apple ID unlocked. If a scam link or fake “verify your iCloud” message appears on the tablet, route pressure to #166. Soft privacy for her own photos on her phone stays #29 / #31.

Step 5 — Soft MOM, fair hours, and platform ≠ agency

Fair treatment and clear rest still apply when you set tablet rules — do not turn “you may use the iPad” into unpaid overnight device duty or a substitute for her own phone. Soft only on mom.gov.sg. Apple / Google / app-store commercial terms are outside MOM MDW placement rules — do not mix the two. Platform ≠ agency: browsing helpers on SmartMaid is separate from your household Apple ID; licensed EAs place MDWs; SmartMaid does not run your tablet. Streaming shared logins remain #178; kids photo consent #191; Wi‑Fi / door codes #150; own mobile line #158. Put the tablet rule on the house-rules sheet (#32). No invented $. Not legal advice.

Soft MOM

Clear expectations, fair rest, and respectful communication still apply when you decide shared-tablet access. Soft only on mom.gov.sg. Device-maker and app-store commercial terms are not MOM placement rules — keep them separate.

  • Kids’ apps / supervising window vs her own rest-time use separated

  • Logout and return-to-dock script practised once
  • Streaming shared logins stay on #178; Wi‑Fi / door codes on #150; own mobile line on #158
  • Phone / social norms stay on #31; soft privacy #29; scam pressure #166

Scripts

To helper (first ask): You may use the family tablet on the [Guest / helper] profile during [named rest window]. Kids’ main profile stays for the children. Charge it at [spot]. Do not download new apps or sign into payment accounts without asking. When you finish, log out of your chats if we asked, and put it back on charge.

To helper (kids’ apps vs her time): When you are with the children, you may open only the apps we named for them. Your own videos or messaging on the tablet are for your rest time, not during work hours.

To helper (photos / Camera): Do not open the family photo library unless I say so. If you want to take photos or videos of the children, ask first — that follows our kids-photo brief (#191), not a blank Camera pass on the tablet.

To helper (scam / verify prompts): If the tablet shows a message asking you to “verify iCloud,” pay, or unlock something, stop and tell me (#166). Do not tap through.

To co-employer: One tablet rule so she is not told “use it anytime” by one of us and “never touch the iPad” by the other (#120). Phone boundaries stay on #31; streaming logins on #178; this brief is shared tablet / iPad only.

Bottom line

Decide aloud whether the family tablet may be used, which profile, how kids’ apps differ from her rest time, where it charges, what may be downloaded, whether the photo library is open, and how logout works — keep phone norms, streaming shared logins, kids photo consent, Wi‑Fi / door codes, and her own mobile line on their own pages. Browse helpers on SmartMaid; place MDWs through a licensed EA under soft MOM rules. SmartMaid does not run household tablets. Soft household framing only — not legal advice.
