When Helper Asks to Take Photos or Videos of the Children (Singapore)

Published 20 September 2026

Photos of the children are not “just phone use” — and not room privacy alone

When helper asks to take photos or videos of the children (Singapore) is the employer decision process for a live-in MDW who wants to photograph or film the kids — or who already has clips on her phone: who may say yes, what may leave the house, which apps or chats are allowed (if any), whether grandparents may receive a WhatsApp still, and how delete-on-request works when you change your mind. Standing phone and social-media boundaries stay on #31. Room / belongings privacy stays on #29. Streaming or shared logins sit on #178. This page owns children’s photos and videos only.

General guidance only. Soft MOM: mom.gov.sg. SmartMaid.com.sg is a marketplace for helper search. Licensed EAs place MDWs. Camera apps, social platforms, and chat apps are not maid agencies — and SmartMaid does not store or moderate family photos. Platform ≠ agency. No invented $. This is not legal advice and not a PDPA lecture — soft framing only: ask before sharing children’s images.

Neighbouring hubs:

Step 1 — Name yes / no / limited — before the next snap

Say aloud whether she may take stills, short videos, neither, or only when you ask that day. Name the purpose you allow (e.g. “send me one photo when they eat lunch”) versus what you refuse (stories, public posts, group chats you did not name). If co-employers disagree on “harmless memories vs never on her phone,” align first (#120). Write the rule on the house-rules sheet (#32). Phone-use norms stay fair and named (#31) — this step is a children’s-image consent rule, not a full social-media policy rewrite. Soft privacy for bedrooms and personal belongings remains #29; do not mix “no filming in private rooms” with “no photos of the kids outdoors” unless you mean both.

Step 2 — Fix what may leave the house — apps, chats, grandparents WhatsApp

Decide what may be shared outward: nowhere; only to you; only to named grandparents on WhatsApp; never to her friends, public feeds, or helper group chats. Say whether she may keep a copy after sending, or must delete after you confirm receipt. Soft “ask before sharing” — do not invent platform policies or claim PDPA legal advice. Streaming / Netflix-style shared logins are a different ask (#178); this step is kids’ images, not password sharing. If a stranger or message pressures her to “send kids’ photos to verify” or unlock an account, treat it as a suspected scam path (#166) and escalate to you — not to the chat alone.

Step 3 — School, neighbours, and extended-family context (not a pickup rewrite)

School gates, playdates, and family gatherings raise extra eyes. If she walks the children or waits at pickup, keep the pickup routine on #126 — this page only adds: no filming other people’s children without those parents’ okay, and no posting school uniforms or location tags unless you explicitly allow. Soft introductions to neighbours and extended family stay on #42; photo permission for *your* kids does not equal permission to film cousins or neighbours’ children. Childproofing and safety demos stay on #39 — a safety walk-through is not a green light to record the kids “for memory.”

Step 4 — Delete-on-request, already-taken clips, and co-employer alignment

If she already has photos or videos, name a calm process: show you the album or chat thread, delete what you ask, and confirm aloud. Do not invent fines or fees (no invented $). Prefer one household voice so she is not told “delete” by one co-employer and “keep for Ah Ma” by another (#120). Soft privacy still applies to her personal chats and belongings (#29) — you are governing images of your children, not rifling through unrelated private content. Put delete-on-request and “no public post” on the written house-rules sheet (#32).

Step 5 — Soft MOM, fair hours, and platform ≠ agency

Fair treatment and clear rest still apply when you brief photo rules — do not turn “no kids on social media” into an all-night device inspection. Soft only on mom.gov.sg. App terms and chat-platform rules are outside MOM MDW placement rules — do not mix the two. Platform ≠ agency: browsing helpers on SmartMaid is separate from using camera or social apps; licensed EAs place MDWs; SmartMaid does not store family photos or moderate children’s images. General phone / social boundaries remain #31; streaming logins remain #178; scam pressure to send kids’ photos points to #166. No invented $. Not legal advice.

Soft MOM

Clear expectations, fair rest, and respectful communication still apply when you set photo and video rules for the children. Soft only on mom.gov.sg. Social-app commercial terms are not MOM placement rules — keep them separate.

Checklist

  • Yes / no / limited (stills, video, employer-asked only) named aloud
  • What may leave the house: nowhere / only you / named grandparents WhatsApp — never invent PDPA legal claims
  • No public feeds or unnamed group chats unless you allow; soft “ask before sharing”
  • School / neighbours / other children: no filming others without their parents’ okay (#126 pickup routine; #42 introductions)
  • Childproofing demos ≠ photo permission (#39); room privacy stays on #29
  • Delete-on-request process for already-taken clips; co-employers aligned (#120); rule on house-rules sheet (#32)
  • Phone / social norms fair (#31); streaming logins off-ramp to #178; scam “send kids’ photos” to #166
  • Platform ≠ agency; SmartMaid does not store family photos; no invented $; not legal advice

Scripts

To helper (first briefing): For photos and videos of the children, you may [take stills only when I ask / send me one lunch photo / not take any]. You may share [only to me / only to named grandparents on WhatsApp / nowhere else]. Do not post to public apps or helper group chats. If I ask you to delete, please delete and tell me when it is done. Soft privacy for rooms stays as we agreed — this rule is about the children’s images.

To helper (already has clips): Please show me the photos or videos of the children on your phone. Delete the ones I name, then confirm. Do not forward them elsewhere while we sort this.

To co-employer: One consent rule for kids’ photos so she is not balancing “keep for Ah Ma” and “delete everything” (#120). Phone/social hubs stay on #31; room privacy on #29; this brief is children’s images only.

To helper (pressure / scam path): If anyone asks you to send the children’s photos to “verify,” unlock an account, or join a chat you do not know, stop and tell me (#166). Do not send.

To helper (school / others’ kids): At pickup or playdates, do not film other children unless their parents and I both say yes (#126). Our rule covers our kids only.

Bottom line

Decide aloud whether your helper may photograph or video the children, what may leave the house (including grandparents WhatsApp), how delete-on-request works, and how school or neighbours’ children stay out of frame — keep general phone/social boundaries, room privacy, streaming logins, school-pickup routines, childproofing, and scam reports on their own pages. Browse helpers on SmartMaid; place MDWs through a licensed EA under soft MOM rules. SmartMaid does not store family photos. Soft “ask before sharing” only — not legal advice.
