Mid-contract replacement is a path choice — not one button
Needing a different migrant domestic worker (MDW / FDW) before the current contract calmly ends is common — mismatch, early mutual exit, medical or household change, or a replacement clause in your agency agreement. What is *not* common is a single MOM “replace helper” button. You choose among wait / mediate, cancel + rehire, transfer her out (if another employer takes her), and/or transfer-in / overseas hire for your next helper — then run the matching checklists.
This page is an employer mid-contract replacement process overview for Singapore households: when to replace vs wait, cancel+rehire vs transfer-in framing, how agency guarantee / replacement paths usually sit beside your legal duties, timeline forks to transfer (#7) vs overseas (#11), and a sequencing checklist that points to cancel (#21), send-home (#22), fresh search (#23), and Work Permit apply (#19). It is not a fee table and not a substitute for live Ministry of Manpower (MOM) pages.
Use the linked hubs when you need depth — this page routes; it does not re-write those spines:
- Cancel / Special Pass / settle / next-hire orientation: Cancellation checklist for employers (unique #21)
- Planned send-home / tickets / transit writing: Sending an MDW home when the contract ends (unique #22)
- Restart shortlists after a clean exit: Starting a fresh search after employment ends (unique #23)
- Next Work Permit apply spine: Work Permit application for domestic helpers — employer checklist (unique #19)
- Transfer start clocks: Transfer maid timeline — how long until she can start? (unique #7)
- Overseas / new longer pipelines: New/fresh MDWs from home country — longer timelines explained (unique #11)
- Keeping her instead — renewal: Work Permit renewal timeline for MDWs (unique #20)

Hard rule: do not invent agency replacement fees, “free months,” salary figures, levy rates, bond amounts, insurance premiums, or air-ticket prices from this article. Confirm live amounts on mom.gov.sg, with your insurer / bank, and with your licensed employment agency (EA).
SmartMaid.com.sg is a search marketplace. You browse and shortlist biodata published by licensed agencies; SmartMaid is not a maid agency and does not cancel Work Permits, honour placement guarantees, file transfers, or place helpers. See How Smart Maid Singapore differs from a maid agency.
Who does what on mid-contract replacement (employer / EA / MOM / platform)
| Party | Typical role on the mid-contract replace path |
|---|---|
| You (employer of record) | Decide replace vs wait; agree last day if exiting; settle employment issues; cancel or transfer her lawfully; choose transfer-in vs overseas for the next hire; shortlist; engage a licensed EA |
| Licensed EA | Advises whether a replacement / guarantee clause applies; may coordinate exit and the next placement; runs WP / transfer steps for the next helper — as service, not a transfer of your legal duties |
| MOM | Sets cancel, transfer, Work Permit, levy, and Special Pass rules for both the ending relationship and any new one |
| SmartMaid | Lets you search and shortlist published biodata (all / transfer filters) for the next hire; does not act as your EA or honour agency guarantees |

Replace vs wait — decide before you cancel
Mid-contract stress is not automatically a cancel trigger. Soft MOM and good practice both favour a written decision, not a weekend impulse.
| Situation | Lean wait / mediate / coach | Lean replace path |
|---|---|---|
| Early teething (first weeks), unclear house rules, language friction | Clarify duties, rest day, phone boundaries; loop EA early for coaching | Only if safety or trust is already broken |
| Remediable skill gap with a willing helper | Training plan + timeline with EA | If the duty is non-negotiable and she cannot meet it |
| Mutual agreement that the fit will not work | Still plan exit calmly — then replace | Start cancel / send-home / next-hire sequencing |
| Safety, abuse concerns, or serious misconduct | Escalate appropriately; do not “wait it out” | Follow lawful exit + MOM guidance; EA + soft MOM dispute paths |
| You mainly want a different nationality / photo | Pause — rewrite must-haves (#23 lessons) | Replace only after a real duty/fit decision |
| Contract end is weeks away and you will not renew | Prefer planned #22 send-home + #23 search | Mid-contract “emergency replace” framing may be unnecessary |
Do not cancel while still hoping she will stay, and do not leave her without a lawful stay path while you “test” biodata. Soft MOM: overstaying and employing without a valid work pass are consequences to avoid.
If the real question is renew her, leave this page and use unique #20.
Cancel + rehire vs transfer-in (two different people)
Language traps employers: “transfer” can mean (a) she moves to another employer, or (b) you hire a helper who is already in Singapore. Mid-contract replacement usually mixes one exit path for the current helper with one hire path for the next.
For the helper who is leaving your household
| Path | When it fits | Deep hub |
|---|---|---|
| Cancel + send home | She will leave Singapore; no receiving employer | #21 cancel + #22 send-home |
| Transfer out | Another employer will take her on under MOM transfer rules | Transfer vs new guide; soft MOM transfer alternative to cancel |
| Cancel after she already left / will not return | Overseas leave → non-return | Unique #1 non-return playbook + #21 |
For the helper you want next
| Path | When it fits | Deep hub |
|---|---|---|
| Transfer-in (already in Singapore) | You need a sooner start when notice + WP transfer align | Unique #7 + transfer maid search |
| Overseas / new or fresh | You can wait a longer combined window (medicals, IPA, travel, often SIP) | Unique #11 + search maids |
| Cancel + rehire (same EA or new EA) | Exit current employment cleanly, then run a full next-hire WP path | #21 / #22 → #23 → #19 |
Cancel + rehire means: end the current Work Permit relationship lawfully, then apply / transfer for someone else. It is not “swap names on the same permit.” Soft MOM treats each employment relationship on its own cancel / transfer / apply clocks.

Agency guarantee / replacement-policy path (soft — verify your contract)
Many licensed EAs offer a replacement or guarantee window after deployment. That is a commercial service term between you and the EA — it does not replace MOM cancel, transfer, Special Pass, or levy rules, and it does not invent a free helper.
What to clarify with your EA in writing (no $ invented here):
- What triggers replacement — mismatch, medical, helper-initiated exit, employer-initiated exit, misconduct carve-outs.
- What the window is — calendar days / months from deployment or from a defined start event (confirm your letter).
- What “replacement” includes — one transfer-in, overseas pipeline, limited shortlists, or advisory only.
- Who pays which logistics — tickets, medicals, levy bridging — ask; do not assume from blogs.
- What you must still do — cancel timing, salary settlement, Special Pass, passport validity remain your soft MOM duties (#21 / #22).
- Whether a new EA is allowed mid-stream — some guarantees bind you to that EA’s pool; others do not.
If you never signed a replacement clause, you still can replace — you simply run cancel / send-home / fresh search / WP apply without that commercial overlay.
SmartMaid does not honour or broker agency guarantees. Browse biodata, then let your licensed EA confirm policy against your signed agreement.
Timeline fork — transfer (#7) vs overseas (#11)
Do not promise your household a start date before you pick a pipeline.
| Need | Prefer | Why (orientation only) |
|---|---|---|
| Someone in the home sooner, when notice + WP transfer can align | Transfer-in | Detail clocks on unique #7; popular profiles move quickly — shortlist early |
| Time to select carefully / skills hard to find locally | Overseas / new | Longer combined window on unique #11 |
| Agency guarantee points to one pool | Follow the written EA path, still check #7 / #11 realism | Guarantee ≠ instant start |
| Exit paperwork still open | Keep #21 / #22 on the critical path in parallel | Do not strand Special Pass / ticket duties while shortlisting |
Open both search pools only if your calendar can absorb either clock: search maids · transfer maids.

FAQ
Can I “replace” her on the same Work Permit?
No. Soft MOM framing: ending employment and starting a new one are separate cancel / transfer / apply paths. Use #21 for exit and #19 for the next hire.
Is cancel + rehire the same as transfer-in?
No. Cancel + rehire ends the current relationship then hires someone else (transfer or overseas). Transfer-in is specifically hiring a helper already in Singapore — clocks on #7.
Should I shortlist before I cancel?
Often yes for calendar reasons — but keep cancel / Special Pass / tickets on track (#21 / #22). Unique #23 covers when to reopen shortlists after (or alongside) a clean exit plan.
Does an agency guarantee skip MOM steps?
No. Guarantees are commercial terms. MOM cancel, transfer, levy, and stay rules still apply.
Does SmartMaid replace my helper?
No. SmartMaid is a biodata search marketplace. A licensed EA runs placement, guarantees (if any), and Work Permit steps.
Where do fees appear?
On your EA agreement / worksheet, contract, and mom.gov.sg. This article quotes no dollar amounts.
What if I might still renew her?
Stop the replace path and use unique #20 before you cancel.

## What changed vs live
- Replaced thin rest-day / fair-employment twin boilerplate (shared rest-day cluster meta + mandatory rest day / compensation / health / disputes Soft CTA; mid-contract replacement only in H1) with a full mid-contract MDW replacement process overview.
- Added sections for who does what, replace vs wait, cancel+rehire vs transfer-in (exit person ≠ next person), agency guarantee / replacement-policy soft framing, timeline fork → #7 / #11, sequencing checklist → #21 / #22 / #23 / #19, platform≠agency, FAQ, and CTAs to `/search-maid` · `/search-transfer-maid` · `/maid-agencies`.
- Linked unique #21 cancellation, #22 send-home, #23 fresh search, #19 WP apply, #7 transfer timeline, #11 overseas longer timelines, #20 renewal, #3 agency questions, #1 non-return, transfer vs new, first-time hire, agency relationship, platform-vs-agency. No invented $. Soft MOM.
- Kept SERP intent distinct from unique #21 (cancel checklist), #22 (send-home logistics), #23 (fresh search after exit), #19 (WP apply spine): this page owns mid-contract replace decision + path routing.
- Not an A4 301→#20 twin; live twin was rest-day cluster boilerplate, not renewal.
