A short drill beats a long lecture after smoke
A migrant domestic worker (MDW / FDW) may know how to cook and clean and still not know your stairwell, your meeting point, your extinguisher shelf, or who dials 995 if you are not home. A calm fire drill basics walk — exits, meeting point, 995, extinguisher location, no lift in fire, kids and pets plan — is safer than shouting instructions when the corridor already smells of smoke.
This page is an employer whole-flat fire-drill briefing for Singapore HDB and condo units with a live-in helper. It is general employment guidance only. Ministry of Manpower (MOM): confirm live accommodation, rest-day, and welfare rules on mom.gov.sg. Fire, smoke, gas leak, or medical emergency: call 995 (ambulance / fire) or 999 (police) as appropriate — do not wait for a blog post or for your agency to call back. Follow live Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF) / building management guidance when it differs from this overview.
Use neighbouring hubs for depth this page does not re-write:
- Kitchen cookspace + gas / oil fire: Kitchen safety and gas stove briefing
- Cleaning chemicals / bleach / fumes: Cleaning product safety in Singapore homes
- Arrival-day scope (brief dangerous demos only): Day one orientation checklist for new MDWs
- Written house-rules sheet: Creating a simple written house rules sheet
- This article: whole-flat fire drill — exits, meeting point, 995, extinguisher, no lift, kids / pets roles
Hard rule: do not invent salary, levy, agency fees, insurance premiums, extinguisher prices, “fire-drill package” dollars, or fine amounts from this article. Money and compliance sit with your signed terms, your licensed employment agency (EA), and live MOM / SCDF / building guidance — not with a blog post.
SmartMaid.com.sg is a search marketplace. You browse and shortlist biodata published by licensed agencies; SmartMaid is a maid search platform, not a mediator, and does not run fire drills in your block. See How Smart Maid Singapore differs from a maid agency.
Who owns the fire drill (employer / EA / MOM / platform)
| Party | Role for whole-flat fire drill |
|---|---|
| You (employer of record) | Walk *your* exits once; name the meeting point; show extinguisher / alarm panel if present; say “no lift in fire”; assign kids / pets roles; write a one-line fire do / don’t; say who calls 995 when you are out |
| Licensed EA | Aftercare if a fire scare becomes a welfare or early-issue concern — per your service agreement; not a substitute for you walking *your* stairwell |
| MOM | Employment standards (rest days, accommodation / reasonable privacy, ill-treatment, Work Permit). Welfare channels are for safety and compliance, not for “she preferred a different meeting point” |
| SmartMaid | Search and shortlist published biodata if you later need a next hire; does not enter your block or certify fire drills |
Our guide Day One Orientation Checklist for New MDWs owns which demos fit arrival day (dangerous only — a short exit / 995 pass belongs there). The related guide owns cookspace fire / gas. Our guide Cleaning Product Safety in Singapore Homes owns chemical fumes. Our guide Creating a Simple Written House Rules Sheet can hold a one-line “no lift in fire / meet at X / call 995” rule. This page owns the whole-flat drill.
Drill sequence (walk → assign → note)
Keep it calm and short. Photos of the stair door, meeting point, and extinguisher help when English is a second language.
- Walk — from the unit door to the nearest safe stair / exit (and a second route if your layout has one). Point to the assembly / meeting point outside. Show the fire extinguisher (and any hose reel / break-glass you want her to know exists. Say clearly: do not use the lift in a fire.
- Assign — who grabs kids / pets if safe; who dials 995; who texts / calls you if you are at work; who stays with elders. One role per person when possible.
- Note — sticky or phone photo: *Do* (stairs; meeting point X; call 995; close door behind if safe) and *Don’t* (lift; go back for phones / documents; fight a spreading fire alone). Paste the same lines onto our guide Creating a Simple Written House Rules Sheet house-rules sheet.
Day-one vs later: our guide Day One Orientation Checklist for New MDWs says day one is for dangerous demos only — a short exit + 995 + no-lift pass belongs there. Save a fuller walk (second route, extinguisher feel, kids / pets roles, condo vs HDB quirks) for the same evening or day 2 — still using this page’s sequence, not the related guide’s stove blocks or our guide Cleaning Product Safety in Singapore Homes’s chemical cupboard.
Exits: know two ways out if you can
| Teach | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| Main exit from the unit (front door → corridor → stair) | Default path when smoke is not blocking it |
| Second route if your flat / floor has one (e.g. service stair, opposite wing) | Primary route can be blocked by smoke or neighbours’ belongings |
| Where the stair door is — and that it must stay closed after you pass | Stairs are a protected route only if doors are not propped open |
| Which corridor dead-ends (storage cages, refuse rooms) | Avoid teaching a “shortcut” that traps people |
| How to leave with keys / access card if your door auto-locks | She must not lock herself out of the only exit mid-drill |
Do: walk the route once in daylight; walk it again briefly at night if lighting is different; keep the corridor side of your door clear of shoes and boxes that trip people.
Don’t: treat the lift lobby as an “exit plan”; prop open fire doors “for breeze”; assume she remembers a verbal route after one rushed sentence on arrival day.
HDB note: long common corridors, multiple stair cores, and refuse-chute areas can confuse a new helper. Point to your stair letter / colour if the block uses them.
Condo note: card-access stairs, carpark links, and concierge / side gates vary by estate — show the route your management expects for fire assembly, not a tourist shortcut through the pool deck.
Meeting point: one outdoor place everyone can name
A drill fails if people leave the unit and then wander looking for each other.
- Name one outdoor meeting point (e.g. void-deck pillar, driveway tree, condo drop-off kerb, opposite block entrance) that is away from the building face and vehicle lanes.
- Say the phrase she should remember: “If we leave for fire or smoke, we meet at X.”
- Practice once: leave the unit calmly → stairs → stand at X → you count heads.
- If she is alone with children when you are at work, the meeting point still applies — she does not wait inside “until employer comes.”
- Building management / SCDF may designate a formal assembly area; if your estate posts one, use that and put the same words on the sticky.
Our guide Creating a Simple Written House Rules Sheet can hold the one-line meeting-point rule. This page owns why it exists and how you rehearse it.
Call 995 — who dials, what to say
| Teach | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| 995 for fire / ambulance | Singapore’s primary fire and medical emergency number |
| 999 for police when that is the need | Do not mix the two in a panic script |
| Who dials if you are not home (helper / older teen / neighbour agreed in advance) | “I was waiting for employer” delays help |
| Address format she can read off a sticky (block / unit / street / landmark) | Operators need a clear location fast |
| Stay on the line if safe; move to the meeting point after you hang up if told to evacuate | Phone calls do not replace getting out |
Do: put 995, 999, your number, spouse / backup, EA coordinator, and the unit address on one card near the door / fridge (our guide Day One Orientation Checklist for New MDWs already lists emergency contacts on day one — this page owns the fire call script).
Don’t: invent extra hotline numbers that may change; tell her to “call the agency first” instead of 995 when there is active fire or heavy smoke; rely on WhatsApp to you as the only alert if flames are spreading.
Cookspace smoke that you can control with a lid / extinguisher still belongs to the related guide’s non-hero basics. Corridor smoke, burning smell from another unit, or alarm that will not stop belongs to this page: get people out, call 995.
Extinguisher location (know it — do not play hero)
You need a known location and a simple first move, not a firefighter course.
- Show where the household extinguisher lives (kitchen wall, utility cupboard, corridor cabinet) — eye level if possible, not buried behind vacuum bags.
- If your HDB / condo floor has a hose reel / extinguisher cabinet in the common corridor, point to it once so she knows it exists; do not invent pressure ratings or brand claims from this blog.
- Say the limit in plain words: small, contained, and only if her exit path stays clear. If smoke fills the room, the fire grows, or she is alone with children, leave and call 995.
- The related guide owns the kitchen fire cloth / blanket / never water on oil briefing. This page owns where the extinguisher is and when to abandon it for the exit.
Do: check the gauge / pin on your schedule (without quoting fake expiry law from this article); keep the path to it clear.
Don’t: ask her to “practise” by discharging a real extinguisher indoors; send her back into smoke to “save the sofa.”
No lift in fire — say it twice
This is the hard rule for HDB and condo towers. Say it on day one and again on the drill walk.
| Why no lift | Plain language |
|---|---|
| Smoke enters lift shafts | People can be trapped between floors |
| Power can fail mid-ride | Rescue is slower than stairs for able-bodied households |
| Lift lobbies fill with people and panic | Stairs move people out; lifts concentrate risk |
| Firefighters need lift control | Occupant lift use fights the response |
Do: use stairs for the drill even if it feels slow; carry a torch / phone light if stairwells are dim; help elders and children at their pace.
Don’t: “just take the lift down two floors”; hold the lift door for neighbours during a real alarm; teach children that the lift is the escape plan.
If someone in the household cannot use stairs (mobility), plan in advance with building management / SCDF guidance and your own household — Write the agreed plan on our guide Creating a Simple Written House Rules Sheet sheet so the helper is not guessing alone.
Kids and pets plan
Live-in MDW households often put the helper with children or animals when adults are at work. The drill must name that reality.
| Role | Teach |
|---|---|
| Infants / toddlers | Who carries whom; pram left behind if it blocks stairs; no “one more toy” delay |
| School-age kids | Hold an adult / helper hand; meeting point X; no running back for devices |
| Elders | Who assists; slower stair pace; second adult if needed |
| Pets | Carrier / leash location; only if grab is seconds and exit stays clear — pets do not override human evacuation |
| Helper alone | She may leave with kids / pets for the meeting point and call 995 / you — she does not need your permission text before exiting active smoke |
Do: rehearse once with the people who are usually home at 10 a.m. and once with the evening cast if they differ.
Don’t: assign the helper three conflicting jobs (extinguish + grab documents + carry two toddlers); punish her later for leaving without “finishing the wok” when smoke was real — retrain kitchen habits on the related guide after everyone is safe.
Chemical fume evacuate (bleach mix in a sealed bathroom) stays on our guide Cleaning Product Safety in Singapore Homes. This page owns fire / smoke / alarm roles for kids and pets.
HDB vs condo quirks (same drill spine)
| Topic | HDB-leaning note | Condo-leaning note |
|---|---|---|
| Stairs | Multiple cores / long corridors — name your stair | Card-access or locked stairs — show how she opens them in an alarm |
| Meeting point | Void deck / opposite block / marked area | Drop-off / gate / posted assembly point from management |
| Alarms | Smoke / heat alarms in unit if installed; neighbour cooking smell ≠ ignore real alarm | Estate fire alarm panels / PA — teach “alarm means leave,” not “wait for WhatsApp from MCST” |
| After you exit | Do not re-enter for laundry on the bamboo pole | Do not re-enter for the carpark remote or gym bag |
The spine is identical: exits → meeting point → 995 → extinguisher known → no lift → kids / pets roles. Only the landmarks change.
When to call the employer vs call 995 first
Call / text you (employer) when:
- She smells light cooking smoke that cleared after she followed the related guide (lid / heat off) and everyone is fine
- She is unsure where the extinguisher is before any emergency (ask during the briefing, not during flames)
- A false alarm habit in the estate confuses her — you clarify with management, then retrain the leave rule
- She wants to update the meeting-point sticky after renovations
Call 995 first when:
- Visible flames, thick smoke, or heat at the door
- Fire alarm continues and smoke is in the corridor / unit
- Someone cannot breathe, is burned, or cannot walk out
- Gas smell with dizziness / you suspect a leak (also see the related guide)
- She is alone with children and the safe choice is leave + dial
Licensed EA: loop aftercare if a fire scare becomes a welfare, fear, or early-employment issue — not as a replacement for 995 or for your own stair walk. Soft pointer: When to loop the agency into early issues if you need the escalation map.
Written fire do / don’t (copy onto the house-rules sheet)
Do
- Use stairs; go to meeting point X
- Call 995 for fire / heavy smoke / medical emergency
- Know where the extinguisher is; use only if small, contained, and exit stays clear
- Close the unit door behind you if safe
- Take kids / pets only if the grab is quick and the path is clear
Don’t
- Use the lift in a fire
- Go back for phones, passports, or laundry
- Fight a spreading fire alone
- Wait inside for the employer’s text before leaving active smoke
- Prop open fire doors
Paste this block onto our guide Creating a Simple Written House Rules Sheet. Keep kitchen oil-fire / gas do / don’t on the related guide and chemical do / don’t on our guide Cleaning Product Safety in Singapore Homes so each sheet stays readable.
What not to do
- Do not assume “she lived in an HDB before” means she knows your stair core, meeting point, or condo card access.
- Do not stack a full the related guide gas lecture, a our guide Cleaning Product Safety in Singapore Homes chemical cupboard tour, and a long fire-drill walk into the same exhausted arrival hour — our guide Day One Orientation Checklist for New MDWs keeps day one short.
- Do not punish a near-miss with humiliation; retrain with walk → assign → note, then decide with your EA if welfare support is needed.
- Do not invent fine amounts, extinguisher prices, or “mandatory fire course fees” from this article.
- Do not treat SmartMaid search results as proof of fire-drill competence — confirm in a live walk of your block.
FAQ
How long should the first fire-drill walk take?
Usually 10–20 minutes: exit walk, meeting point, 995 sticky, extinguisher point, no-lift line, kids / pets roles. Save a second-route walk and night lighting check for day 2 if arrival day is packed.
Where does this sit vs kitchen safety and cleaning products?
The related guide owns cooktop / gas / oil-fire behaviour. Our guide Cleaning Product Safety in Singapore Homes owns bleach / acid / no-mix / storage. This page owns the whole-flat leave plan. Link all three; do not merge them into one twin.
Do we need a professional firefighter to train her?
Most homes need a calm employer walk and clear roles. Estate briefings or SCDF public guidance can help.
Can SmartMaid run or certify a fire drill?
SmartMaid is a smart maid search platform for published biodata. Drills happen in your unit and block; emergencies go to 995 / 999; employment compliance stays with you, your EA, and MOM.
Practical next steps
- On day one, run the short exit + 995 + no-lift pass on our guide Day One Orientation Checklist for New MDWs; use this page’s sequence so the pass is complete, not rushed.
- Same evening or day 2, walk stairs → meeting point once; point out the extinguisher; assign kids / pets roles.
- Paste the fire do / don’t onto our guide Creating a Simple Written House Rules Sheet house-rules sheet.
- Keep cookspace fire on the related guide and chemical fumes on our guide Cleaning Product Safety in Singapore Homes so this page stays a whole-flat drill spine.
- After any real alarm or smoke event, pause and retrain before treating it as “just another day.”
- For a future hire, shortlist on search maids · transfer maids; confirm the leave plan in a live walk of your block, not from a blog claim.
