House Visit by MOM: What Employers Should Expect

Published 23 March 2025

A visit is about welfare and compliance — not a “gotcha” show

Some Singapore employers encounter a house visit by MOM (or related welfare / employment checks). Knowing what employers should expect lowers panic: be truthful, keep the home safe and decent for your migrant domestic worker (MDW / FDW), and have basic employment records reachable. Soft Ministry of Manpower (MOM) guidance always wins over rumours — confirm live details on mom.gov.sg.

This page is general employer guidance. SmartMaid.com.sg is a marketplace for biodata. Licensed EAs handle placement. Platform ≠ agency.

Neighbouring hubs:

Why visits happen (high level)

Visits and checks can relate to welfare, housing adequacy, employment conditions, or follow-ups on information MOM receives. Exact triggers and procedures are set by MOM — do not rely on WhatsApp folklore. If your EA contacts you about a visit, ask them what they know and what documents help.

What officers may look at / ask about (typical themes)

Themes employers often prepare for (confirm live MOM guidance):

  • Helper’s sleeping space, privacy, and basic amenities
  • Food access and general well-being
  • Rest-day understanding (soft MOM weekly rest framing)
  • Whether duties match lawful domestic work (not illegal deployment)
  • Whether the employer–helper relationship shows safety and respect
  • Basic employment particulars you should be able to locate

Stay factual. Do not coach the helper to lie.

Calm prep checklist (48 hours if you have notice)

  • Tidy the helper’s room / sleeping area; ensure bedding, ventilation, lighting are decent
  • Make sure she can access food and water without humiliation rituals
  • Locate Work Pass / EA contacts / key employment papers (record-keeping)
  • Brief co-employers: one calm spokesperson, no arguing in front of officers
  • Remind yourself: courtesy + honesty

If you have no notice, the same standards still apply every day — that is the real prep.

How to speak during a visit

  • Greet politely; verify who you are speaking with
  • Answer questions directly; say “I need to check the file” if unsure
  • Allow the helper a chance to speak without intimidation
  • Do not offer cash, gifts, or “special arrangements”
  • If something is unclear, ask for official clarification channels rather than guessing

What not to do

  • Hide the helper or coach scripted answers
  • Threaten her about what she may say
  • Show a punishment log or shaming photos
  • Invent fee/salary stories (no invented $ on this site)
  • Argue that marketplace browsing somehow replaces EA/MOM rules

Link to illegal deployment and welfare

If your household has been stretching duties outside lawful domestic work, fix that before any visit — see neighbouring compliance twins once rewritten (illegal deployment guide). Welfare and zero-tolerance expectations: abuse zero-tolerance. Unsafe situations: 995 / 999.

After the visit

  • Note date, who visited, what was requested, what you agreed to follow up
  • Loop your EA if corrective steps or documents are needed (loop EA early)
  • Update your employment file folder
  • Thank the helper for staying calm; restore normal respectful routines

Soft MOM reminder

Always prefer live MOM instructions over this summary. Soft MOM: mom.gov.sg. Marketplace ≠ agency.

Copyable employer checklist

  • [ ] Decent sleeping space and food access every day — not only “for inspection”
  • [ ] Employment file findable in minutes
  • [ ] Co-employers aligned on calm honesty
  • [ ] No coaching / threats
  • [ ] EA on call for process questions
  • [ ] No invented $; platform ≠ agency

Sample scripts

If contacted about a visit: “We’ll cooperate fully. Please tell us any documents to prepare. Our EA contact is [name].”

To helper beforehand (if you have notice): “MOM may visit to check that you’re safe and the home is okay. Please answer truthfully. You won’t be punished for honest answers.”

Bottom line

House visit by MOM: what employers should expect is straightforward if your home already treats the helper lawfully and decently: be organised, be honest, keep records handy, and follow soft MOM guidance. Browse biodata on SmartMaid; compliance sits with you and your licensed EA.
