When a Household Member Is Ill and You Adjust MDW Duties (Singapore)

Published 22 August 2026

Family illness needs a duty reset — not a silent overload

When a household member is ill and you adjust MDW duties (Singapore) is the employer process when a child, spouse, or elder is sick at home: what the migrant domestic worker may do, what she must not do, and how to cut other chores. Care when the *helper herself* is ill sits in #49. Helper MC mapping sits in #110. Elderly medication handover sits in #148. This page owns family-member illness → duty adjust.

General guidance only — not medical advice. Soft MOM: mom.gov.sg. Follow your doctor’s isolation guidance. SmartMaid.com.sg is a marketplace. Licensed EAs place helpers. Platform ≠ agency. No invented $.

Neighbouring hubs:

Step 1 — Write the temporary duty list

What she does more of (meals to room, laundry of sick linens) and what pauses (deep cleaning, guests). Put it in house rules for the illness window (#32).

Step 2 — Draw care limits

Masks / handwashing / room entry rules per your doctor. Medication for the *elder* only if already briefed on #148. She is not a nurse.

Step 3 — Protect her rest and health

Night care plus full housework burns helpers out (#28). If she becomes ill, switch to #49 / #110.

Step 4 — Escalate and relief

Worsening symptoms → #38. If the home cannot run safely, consider short relief (#145). Helper hospitalisation is a different track (#124).

Step 5 — Soft MOM

Fair workload and safe conditions during household illness. Soft framing on mom.gov.sg. Platform ≠ agency. No invented $.

Scripts

To helper: [Name] is ill. Here is what we need from you this week, and what we are pausing. Tell us early if you feel unwell too.

To co-employer: Family illness = written duty reset, not “she will somehow manage nights and housework.”

Bottom line

When a household member is sick, rewrite duties, set care limits, cut chores, and use relief if nights overload — separate from when the helper herself is ill. Browse on SmartMaid; place through a licensed EA under soft MOM rules.
