Does My Myanmar Helper Need a Visa for Malaysia? Employer Guide

Published 8 October 2026

Many Singapore families pop across to Johor Bahru for a meal or a weekend, and it is natural to want your helper to come along. If she holds a Myanmar passport, the first question is whether she needs a visa for Malaysia. The short answer: check Malaysia's official immigration sources before every trip, because the rules for Myanmar passport holders have changed recently and official pages do not always update at the same time. This guide explains where to look and what to prepare.

Short answer: check official Malaysian sources

Her Singapore Work Permit lets her live and work in Singapore. It does not decide whether she can enter Malaysia; that depends on her passport and Malaysia's rules.

At the time of writing (29 September 2026), two official Malaysian pages give different pictures:

Because the official sources differ, do not rely on social media or old forum posts. Before you book, confirm the current position with the Immigration Department of Malaysia or the Malaysian High Commission in Singapore, and allow time for a visa if one is needed.

Documents usually asked for

Whatever the visa position, prepare these for every trip:

  • A valid passport. MOM's overseas travel guidance asks employers to make sure the helper's passport is valid. Check the expiry date well before you travel, as many countries expect several months of validity.
  • Her digital work pass or Work Permit card, so she can re-enter Singapore. MOM encourages helpers to use the digital work pass in the SGWorkPass app.
  • A Malaysia Digital Arrival Card (MDAC), if it applies to her. Malaysia's MDAC portal explains who must register before arrival.
  • A visa, if required, obtained through official channels only.

Applying from Singapore: official channels only

If a visa is needed, use Malaysia's official eVisa portal or ask the Malaysian High Commission in Singapore how to apply. The Embassy in Yangon advises applying at least two weeks before departure. Avoid third-party sites that charge extra to "process" visas, and never hand her passport to anyone you cannot verify.

Help her fill in the form correctly: her name must match her passport exactly. Keep copies of any approval letter with your travel documents.

Day trips to JB: what to prepare

  • Confirm the visa and MDAC position a few days before, not on the morning of the trip.
  • Pack her passport, phone with the SGWorkPass app, and a copy of any visa.
  • Agree the plan: where you are going, when you will return, and what she will be doing. A trip with your family is not her rest day unless you agree that it is.
  • Keep a copy of her passport and Work Permit details on your phone in case anything is lost.

Coming back into Singapore

She re-enters Singapore on her passport and Work Permit. ICA says Long-Term Pass holders, including Work Pass holders, do not need to submit the SG Arrival Card when travelling through the Woodlands and Tuas land checkpoints. If she returns by air or sea, she needs to submit it within three days before arrival. Check ICA's SG Arrival Card page for the current rules.

If her passport details have changed recently, update them in FDW eService before travelling. MOM informs ICA, and she can use the automated gates 4 working days after the confirmation email.

Other nationalities: where to check

The same principle applies to helpers from Indonesia, the Philippines, India, Sri Lanka and elsewhere: check Malaysia's visa requirement page for her passport, and confirm with official sources. For India and Sri Lanka, for example, the Immigration Department's page lists specific arrangements that can change.

FAQ

Does she need my permission to travel to Malaysia?

Discuss any trip in advance. If she travels on her rest day, agree the plan together so that you know when she expects to return and she carries her passport and work pass.

What if she loses her Work Permit card in Malaysia?

Tell MOM straight away. MOM can issue a letter for her to re-enter Singapore, and you then apply for a replacement card. Using the digital work pass lowers the risk.
