Once you have chosen a helper, the MOM steps set most of the timeline. First-time employers attend the Employers' Orientation Programme before applying. A Work Permit application in FDW eService is processed within 1 week, or about 3 weeks by online form. After the in-principle approval, you buy the security bond and insurance (the bond details take up to 3 working days to reach MOM), and she can then fly in. After arrival come the medical exam within 14 days and, for first-timers, the Settling-in Programme within 7 days.
Before you apply
- Employers' Orientation Programme (EOP): required for first-time employers before the Work Permit application.
- Singpass: needed to use FDW eService. Set it up early; see employer Singpass setup.
- Interviews and checks: MOM suggests interviewing in person where possible, and you can check a candidate's employment history in FDW eService with her FIN and nationality.
- Her written consent to the application.

Approval to arrival
- Send her the in-principle approval (IPA) letter. She shows it at immigration.
- Check the IPA details match her passport.
- Buy the $5,000 security bond (not needed for Malaysian helpers), medical insurance and personal accident insurance. The bank or insurer needs up to 3 working days to send the bond details to MOM, and the bond must be in effect when she lands.
- For a first-time helper, register her for the Settling-in Programme once you know her arrival date.
- If she needs longer to arrive, extend the IPA in FDW eService.
Arrival day and the first two weeks
- Settling-in Programme for first-time helpers within 7 days of arrival, excluding Sundays and public holidays.
- Medical examination within 14 days of arrival.
- Get the Work Permit issued within 2 weeks of arrival, then give her the Temporary Work Permit.
- If the Temporary Work Permit says so, she registers fingerprints and photo within 1 week of issue.
- Levy starts on the 5th day after arrival (counting the arrival day) for first-time helpers, or the day after arrival for others.
