Leave is predictable — the care gap should be too
If your migrant domestic worker (MDW / FDW) supports an elderly parent, her weekly rest day or longer home leave raises a real question: who will look after my elderly when maid is on leave? Answer it weeks ahead with a written cover plan — not the night before.
General guidance only. Soft MOM: weekly rest and employment rules on mom.gov.sg. SmartMaid.com.sg is a marketplace. Licensed EAs handle placement. Platform ≠ agency.
Neighbouring hubs:

Map the leave type
| Leave type | Typical planning window |
|---|---|
| Weekly rest day | Standing roster every week |
| Medical / MC for helper | Same-day backup contacts |
| Home leave / overseas leave | Plan 4–8 weeks ahead when possible |
| Your family holiday overlapping her leave | Double cover — do not assume she stays |
Soft MOM weekly rest is not optional goodwill. Build cover that respects it.
Cover options Singapore households actually use
Pick what fits safety and dignity (not what is cheapest in a rumour):
- Family rotation — siblings take fixed slots; write meds and meal times
- Co-employer / spouse stays home for key hours
- Trusted relative overnight for longer leave
- Day-care / senior centre sessions if already enrolled and suitable
- Respite / private care arranged through proper providers (ask EA for lawful options — do not illegally deploy another MDW into your gap)
- Hospital / clinic appointment clustering so heavy escort days land when help exists
No invented $ rates for respite or centres on this page — get quotes directly.
Illegal deployment warning
Do not “borrow” someone else’s helper for commercial-style cover or undeclared work. See illegal deployment (unique #68). Ask your EA what lawful temporary options exist.
Handover note for whoever covers
One page is enough:
- Meds list + times (and who may change doses — usually only clinician)
- Mobility / fall risks
- Food texture / allergies
- Emergency contacts + which hospital
- What “call 995 now” looks like for this elder
- Helper’s return date/time
Walk through it once with the cover person while the helper is still present if possible.
Talk to the helper early
- Confirm leave dates in writing
- Ask her to list tasks that must not be skipped
- Agree what she will rest from — guilt-tripping away her rest day creates burnout
Fair workloads hub: preventing burnout.
If the elder’s needs grew past one helper
Leave gaps expose understaffing. Consider whether you need a different duty mix, medical social support, or a new search for stronger elderly-care experience — browse on SmartMaid, hire via EA.
