What to Do When GIRO Levy Deduction Fails Twice

Published 16 September 2026

A single failed GIRO deduction is usually easy to fix, but two in a row need prompt action. MOM states that if levy payments are missed for two consecutive months, the helper's Work Permit will be revoked the following month, and the employer may be barred from applying for Work Permits until the levy is settled.

Act the same day

  1. Check the status: log in to MOM's levy service (about two working days after the deduction date) or check your bank app to confirm the deduction failed.
  2. Pay the outstanding amount: settle the unpaid levy, including any late-payment penalty, as soon as possible. PayNow QR is an option when GIRO has failed.
  3. Find the cause: the most common reasons are insufficient funds by 6pm the working day before the deduction, a GIRO limit lower than the bill, or a closed or changed bank account.
  4. Fix the GIRO arrangement: raise the limit, top up the account, or set up GIRO again with the new account so the next deduction succeeds.

Why two failures are serious

  • A late-payment penalty is added to the unpaid levy, so the next bill is higher.
  • Missing two consecutive months can lead to the Work Permit being revoked, which means your helper can no longer work for you.
  • You may not be allowed to apply for or renew Work Permits, and MOM may take legal action to recover unpaid levy.

Preventing it next time

  • Set a reminder a few days before the 17th of each month.
  • Keep a buffer in the GIRO account, especially if your rate changes or you hire a second helper.
  • Update GIRO immediately when you change banks.
  • Check the bill each month so an unexpected amount does not catch you out.

If you are away or unwell

Ask a family member to monitor the account, or keep enough funds for two months. If you are facing genuine financial difficulty, contact MOM early rather than letting payments lapse.

Setting up a backup payer

MOM lets you appoint one family member to pay the levy on your behalf by PayNow QR. You submit a consent form, and approval takes up to 3 working days. Each person can pay for up to 2 employers. Setting this up in advance is useful if you travel often or expect a hospital stay, so a missed deduction can be settled quickly by someone you trust.

Common questions

Can I pay the missed levy without GIRO?

Yes. If you do not have a working GIRO arrangement, MOM accepts PayNow QR for levy payments. Pay the outstanding amount as soon as you notice the failure.

Will my helper be affected by one failed deduction?

A single failure adds a late-payment penalty to your next bill. The serious risk comes from missing two consecutive months, so fix the cause straight away.
