Age and experience are two of the first filters employers use, and MOM has firm rules on the first. Knowing where the rules end and your own preferences begin helps you shortlist fairly and avoid applications that cannot proceed.
MOM's age rules
- New applications: a helper must be from 23 to below 50 years old at the time of the Work Permit application.
- Renewals: helpers aged 50 and above can only renew their Work Permits until they are 60.
So a helper aged 52 who is already working in Singapore can continue through renewals, subject to the other conditions, while a first application for a 52-year-old would not be approved.
Other eligibility rules
- At least 8 years of formal education with a recognised certificate.
- From an approved source country or region.
- Not related to the employer, and not in Singapore while the application is processed.
Experience: what MOM does and does not set
MOM does not require a minimum number of years of experience. A first-time helper, meaning one who has never worked in Singapore as a helper, attends the Settling-in Programme after arrival. Experienced helpers, including transfers already in Singapore, do not.
How to judge experience in a biodata
- Look for specifics: ages of children cared for, whether she cooked daily, and how long each job lasted.
- Singapore experience: helps with local routines, appliances and HDB living, but overseas experience in Hong Kong, Taiwan or the Middle East can be just as relevant.
- Skill ratings: agencies often rate skills such as infant care, elderly care and cooking. Treat these as a starting point and test them in the interview.
- Willingness: a helper who is willing to learn a task can be a better fit than one who has done it without enthusiasm.
Matching age and experience to your household
- Newborns and toddlers: look for recent infant or childcare experience and ask about night routines.
- Elderly care: ask about lifting, mobility support and patience with dementia or chronic illness.
- General housework: a younger first-time helper can be a good fit if you are ready to train her.

Interview questions that reveal real experience
- "Tell me about a normal day in your last job, from morning to night."
- "How did you prepare milk and sterilise bottles for the baby?"
- "What did you cook most often, and for how many people?"
- "Why did your last job end?"
Specific, confident answers usually mean real experience. Vague answers are a cue to ask more, not a reason to rule her out.
Common questions
Can I hire a helper who is 49?
MOM's rule is from 23 to below 50 at the time of application, so a 49-year-old can apply. Plan ahead for renewals, which are possible until age 60.
Is a helper with no experience a risky choice?
It depends on your needs. First-time helpers attend the Settling-in Programme, and with patient training many settle in well, especially for general housework.
